#Indiawantsnetneutrality has been trending on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter for the past few days but only few people know about this issue.

All people see are words and phrases like "Net neutrality ", "Act now , save internet ", "India wants net neutrality " and many more. But many people don't know what these things are all about.

This past week , many of my friends asked me,  "what is net neutrality ? " And I somehow managed to make them understand  using some short anecdotes. So, I wanted to write this article to make people easily understand net neutrality.

What is net neutrality ?

Net neutrality (also network neutralityInternet neutrality, or net equality) is the principle that Internet service providers and governments should treat all data on theInternet equally, not discriminating or charging differentially by user, content, site, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or mode of communication.
This is the definition of an open internet.

Why are we talking about net neutrality ?

Internet Service Providers(ISP) have been discussing about charging extra on services  like skype which use VoIP. This was just the beginning .This thought  just got wider and ISPs are thinking of making more money by making users pay for specific apps that they use.

Why it should concern you ?

Ever tried subscribing favourite channels from your DTH service provider.Selecting the package of channels ,sports , entertainment, movies etc.,

This may well be the case if ISPs are approved to charge you for a specific app . You have to pay the price for the basic data charges (for browsing and using other free websites and apps ) and then you have to select the websites and apps that you would be needing and have to pay for that separately .

Your order would be something like this :

Basic data charges : ₹145 (2G ,for 28days)

Social networking sites package : ₹ 30
(Facebook,Twitter,Instagram)

Skype: ₹ 10

blogger.com: ₹200 (You won't see me writing blogs again )

If you still don't understand then here is a short anecdote that will make you understand.

Assume that you are going to a shop to buy a chocolate milkshake  and buy it for some money  .You start to  drink the milkshake with the help of a straw. And when you are about to taste such a delicious milkshake ,the shopkeeper squeezes the straw and stops the milkshake going into your month. He asks money to let the milkshake flow into your mouth. If you give certain amount of money ,he lets small amount to flow .And again he asks more money to let more milkshake to flow. This would be the same thing with ISPs . ISP is the shopkeeper , Milkshake is the open internet and the flow of milkshake through the straw is specific apps and websites that would be charged.

This would be terrifying for not just consumers but also other small website owners and people who rely on their websites for their businesses.
.
Airtel has announced a new service called Airtel Zero which provides free access to certain applications and services. If Flipkart signs up for this plan then you will not be charged for the data that use for accessing Flipkart but Airtel will charge Flipkart for that particular session. So, people will start to use free service and smaller websites would not get the traffic that they deserve and eventually get churned out of business.

So,what should you do to save net neutrality in India ?

Visit     http://www.savetheinternet.in/ and send a response to TRAI which regulates telecom services in India. Thanks to the social networking sites ,  over 1 lakh emails have been sent to TRAI.

Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has asked a committee of six people to submit a report on Net neutrality defying plans that ISPs have chalked out.TRAI released a paper inviting comments on this issue last month .So, your email will certainly have something to save net neutrality in INDIA.Many celebrities have started to show their support too. So, don't wait just sign the damn thing .It would take you just 30secs to save the internet.
